Please help....

Recommended Posts

So I have a IBuyPower [ CyberPower ] PC that is around 3-4 years old. For the past 5 ish months I have needed to restart my computer after like 4 hours of playing on it. It will go like this, I am playing on the server y'know doing what I normally do and then suddenly garrysmod and steam will freeze up and close itself, then I will need to restart my computer to get it to work again. Or Discord will randomly shut down and I will not be able to open it without a restart. Sometimes both my moniters will go black and requires a restart to fix it. This is really annoying because I will be in the middle of RP and bam I will need to restart my computer or middle of hosting/helping in trials and I will need to restart my computer. I have ran a virus scan on it but that did not do anything to fix the issue. Someone please help me.

Does your computer overheat / able to handle heavy workloads?

I do not really know if it overheats but it is a possibility. I play on it a lot now that I have nothing better to do

Could be your processor overloading.
Do you know what your Task Manager shoes prior to these occurances / could you find out?

It is not really a timed thing it just happens at random. Currently however https://gyazo.com/bcaddd1091e2dafdd7109408dff0448d | https://gyazo.com/b8e9ef6bfdbb85f38c93ebb96315b256 | https://gyazo.com/853301998a14c77da8fe1702ffd3ca89 | It has currently been running for around an hour and a half

It could also be a problem with your power supply, Try taking our your battery, dusting it off. And arranging your cord into a way that your laptop could be more ocmfortable

I have a desktop not a laptop

Hey Darkk so I'm not the biggest computer guy when it comes to the technical side of things. But this is some advise I've been given before when it comes to PCs.

There are so many variables when it comes to PCs that we realistically can't tell you what exactly is causing your issue without using / seeing it. Even with full specs there are many factors in play that our advise may by wrong, here is what I suggest. If you have a local place that can check it out I recommend taking to them, especially if they do cheap diagnostics for computers. They are more likely to give you a better answer than we can when it comes to what exactly is wrong with your computer. I recommend staying away from places which are big retailers as they are more likely to put profit over helping you out than a local place. Do some research before you decide who to take it to.

Hope you can find out what's causing these issues for you.

To me it just looks like the system and components are a bit old for the newer versions of the applications you're trying to run. Looking at the screenshots your maxing out your system with just Discord and Chrome running. Adding a heavy load application Ex.(Games, Heavy software) may cause the system to freeze up and leave you unable to access the application. I know it may not be the most convenient, but leaving discord and chrome closed when playing games will certainly help take some of the load off. Chrome uses a lot of CPU so maybe trying edge as it takes up marginally less CPU than Chrome.

Outside of that I don't know if you've got a graphics card in your Computer but if so the PC is not registering it in Hardware. Also there are plenty of things that can cause it to crash outside of software, so make sure the fans are cleared and that there aren't any dust build up's on the fans or motherboard/ make sure the fans are spinning. Just look it over with the flashlight of your phone. (Please do not open/touch anything inside of PC while it is plugged in or turned on)

If everything looks fine and dandy, at that point maybe take it in to get it looked at, the things I listed are super basic fixes and it could be a plethora of other issues. Anyways you've got my TS and Discord so send a dm over if you need anything else.

Just from looking at Task Manager it appears your RAM is bottle necking your comp. How much do you have? If you have less than 8GB of RAM you need a serious upgrade. I recommend closing Chrome whenever you're trying to play something as it has been known to cause massive memory leaks. Also please send a picture of your Task Manager sorted by Memory usage when possible.

He has 8GB and an FX-6300. He needs to be closing everything but the game he's playing.

Rule-maker and rule-breaker.

@Darkk I'm assuming you still have this issue since you haven't responded saying it is fixed so....

First things first, gotta ask the obvious questions:

- Have you verified your Files in Steam?

- Also how many addons do you have? Having too many addons can cause Garry's Mod to straight up Crash, when opening it up or even loading into a server (I know thats not your exact issus but someone else had a problem like this, turns out it was because they had too many addons downloaded). So make sure you don't have 1000+ addons downloaded for servers you don't even play on.

- If you have a 64bit machine then DON'T do this, but if you have a 32bit Machine then try this: Simply try launching Garry's Mod in 32bit. This can be done in the Launch Options on Steam simply type  -32bit  in the Launch Options and launch the Game. But keep in mind that the game might still crash if you alt+ TAB.

- Make sure your Drivers are up to date. Its always good practice to keep your drivers up to date.

- Is your game in the correct resolution? If not you can force it to be in a specific resolution in Steam, within the Launch Options.

- Have you Tried applying autoconfig? Again, this can be applied in Steam within the Launch Options for Garry's Mod by typing  -autoconfig . If you do this to test it out, whether is works or doesn't, remember to remove it from the launch options the next time you start up Garry's Mod.

Once you've tried ALL the options above I have something that may help:

One issue might be that your cfg file is corrupted. After doing some research I found this to be one of many examples online that coincide with the issues you're experiencing.

IF this is the case Then I have a few steps to help, but keep in mind if you're NOT comfortable with doing this then DON'T do it. I am not a tech guru by any stretch of the imagination, and I will not be responsible if anything breaks permanently. I am just doing some research on the matter to try and help you fix the problem.

Go to your Garry's Mod folder:

[Whatever drive you have Garry's Mod installed on] ---> Program Files (x86) ---> Steam ---> steamapps ---> common ---> GarrysMod ---> garrysmod ---> cfg [The Folder you want]

Make a Copy of your cfg folder on your desktop by:

holding Ctrl / Control key ---> select the cfg file and only the cfg file ---> Drag the selected Folder onto your desktop

This will make the copy of the cfg file just in-case anything bad happens, a back up if you will.

Now, open the cfg folder (not the copy you just made and transferred to your desktop, the one still inside the garrysmod folder) and delete everything inside. NOT the cfg folder itself, the stuff inside it. Then simply start the game. When you start the game the contents of the cfg folder should be recreated and Garry's Mod will run at its default settings.

NOTE:

While this can be a hardware issue it might also be a windows issue. You can fix this by Resetting your Windows. This is done easily by:

Pressing the Windows Key ---> Type Reset / Reset this pc ---> Click on the prompt that says "Reset This PC" and follow the steps from there.

Do this as a last resort!

- IF none of this helps or works, then it may be a hardware issue after all. This means that you'll have to get new parts for your PC. Obviously, I cannot Identify specific parts that may be broken. Instead, I’d recommend going to a local PC specialist and allow them to take a look. It will cost you, but it may be better than buying a whole new PC or expensive parts.

- Also try and do your own research on google, you may find something that I missed. You also can better describe the issues you're experiencing making it easier for yourself to identify the issue when conducting research of your own. Look on trusted sites and Steam! I bet many people have had this problem before, give the Steam discussion thread a look over.

@Darkk

To check if your Drivers are up to date, you need to:

- Press the Windows Key ---> Type "Device Manager" ---> Go to "Display Adaptors" ---> Right Click on "Display Adaptors" ---> Then Click on "Update Drivers" ---> A new tab will appear, simply click the option "Search automatically for updated driver software"

It will then update your Drivers or it will tell you that you have the Best Drivers installed.

  • 3 weeks later...

you 100% need to get a new processor. I had the same one until a few days ago and it is an absolute shitter. I noticed immediate improvement when I got a new one. It's incredibly outdated. It may not fix the problem 100% but it will help it.
