Suggestion: A Long-Term Vision for Weapon System Optimization & Expansion
Core Suggestion@!!!:
I propose that the development team begin a long-term project to overhaul and optimize our server's weapon base. I want to preface this by saying that I do not make this suggestion lightly. I am aware that our current TFA base is the result of nearly a decade of work from many different developers, and that it is an incredibly complex and layered system. I understand this is not a request for a simple patch or a quick feature addition, but rather a proposal to invest in the server's future technical health and gameplay potential.
The goal here would be to build a more stable and modular foundation for our weapons, which could eventually open the door for incredible new features—such as a weapon attachment system.
Justification & The "Why":
Currently, Synergy is one of the top 3 major servers within the SWRP community. To maintain that position and continue to draw out the life on GMOD, we should look at areas for foundational improvement. While our current weapons work, they represent a form of "technical debt" that may limit our ability to create some solid new ideas in the future!
Investing the time to streamline this system would yield massive benefits:
A New Competitive Edge: Every server has its basic surface-level features, but a deeply integrated and performant weapon system with meaningful customization would be a technical "Marvel" (haha, get it?). Imagine players working towards earning scopes, extended magazines, or stabilizers through in-game missions or specialized encounters. This would be a system that other servers wouldn't be able to replicate easily.
Meaningful Gameplay Loop: This opens up more options for progression. We could have weapon modification missions, a reason to engage with civilians, or even events that may grant unique weapon mods. This creates content that keeps veteran players engaged and gives new players long-term goals.
Future-Proofing the Server: By tackling this now, we make all future weapon-related development easier. Adding new weapons, balancing existing ones, or fixing bugs becomes a more manageable task for the development team, giving them some breathing room for other projects down the line.
Sticking to the Theme & keeping our RP Potential: This system could be deeply tied to our server's lore. Standard troopers might have limited options, while ARCs or RCs could gain access to a wider array of modifications, reinforcing their elite status. This could be the perfect feature to coincide with a future focus on other groups like ARF, ARC, and RCs getting infrared attachments(or something), MAKING SUBUNITS FEEL WORTH-WHILE!!
Implementation (A Phased Approach):
I do recognize this would be a monumental project, likely something that would take over a year. I do NOT expect to see attachments in-game this year. A realistic approach might look something like:
Phase 1: Identifying issues & creating a plan: A period for the development team to fully assess the current weapon base, identify the core challenges, and map out a potential plan for a rebuild or refactor.
Phase 2: COMPLETE Foundational Rebuild: Developing a new, clean weapon base "behind the scenes." This would be the most time-consuming step, but it is the most critical for long-term success.
Phase 3: Feature Integration & store support: Once a stable new base is established, features like the attachment system & MAYBE SOME >>> STORE EXCLUSIVES <<< could be developed and integrated on top of a solid foundation.
Lore: The GAR was known for its top-of-the-line technology. Allowing players, and especially elite units, to modify their equipment to suit specific wants/needs.. Also...
The actual lore accurate DC-17m is a dream of mine to one day see.
Workshop content if applicable: N/A
Required Development: This would require a significant, long-term commitment from the development team. It is an investment in the server's core infrastructure.
