Both the droids were 'reprogrammed' for maintenance. The Jawa lied as the droids weren't that good at doing repairs they just mess up everything they touch by trying to hit it. They also were in the CIS working for a Jedi Hunter who used them to scope out the area before he invaded with the help of a droid command.
