Lost Hilt after swapping characters.

I recently traded a hilt in game and after receiving the hilt and swapping back I had lost the Item.  I was warned shortly after but still was unable to recover the item. It was a perm trident hilt and not something I could simply accept disappearing from my inventory. Has anyone else had this issue and if so found a solution? Al feed back is appreciated.
