Animated Profile Avatars v3?

Suggestion: Allow basic accounts to use animated profile avatars (or add it as a purchasable option on the store)

Why should we implement this? It would allow people and degenerates to express themselves better

How will this improve the Forums? It would at first be a testing phase, I know the prior ones were denied due to possible performance issues, no idea if the forums have been updated or improved since the last suggestion i figure its something people want, and might be worth suggesting again.

With that being said, it’s always better to deploy changes like this in small batches rather than forcing everyone to reset their avatar one day due to a performance issue. This was the main reason we only allowed it on certain groups.

I haven’t touched the ACP in months as @Forseenhas mostly taken over my old role and I act as a Consultant when needed, he’s welcome to enable gif avatars for all users if he wishes to do so, but understand the negative performance impact it may have and also the pain-in-the-ass it is to reset all avatars like we’ve had to do in the past.
 

My recommendation would be to only allow this if the current cache system is optimized; and understand it still may have a negative performance impact. They probably already know this, but @ Forum Adminshould never touch the cache settings unless you explicitly know what you are doing and have potential support from our host as it can be wonky.

I mean, there’s plenty of people with them, but I guess if you’re previous high staff you can have a profile picture that apparently impacts the optimization.

I hate a hypocritical mf that uses his animated pfp but then says only specific people can use it bc of optimization. @Guac

I agree, this should be an all or nothing situation, either everyone get's to use them or nobody does. But as an alternative, perhaps add it to the store as a package?

Like I said on the last one if @Forseen is cool with it. I'm fine with trying it out and possibly setting some sort of restriction (IE you need some prerequisites, like a verified member or something to prevent file overload)

Best take imo, I didn’t see it as this very cool thing to have an animated pfp, but +1 if it has some kind of high yet achievable pre-requisite (If it was me, you would need high staff OR a very high post count with a net-positive rep)

this at the very least. i like to customize profiles. whether it be forums launchers or anything along those lines.

I will keep this thread updated on the status. I have gotten approval from Forseen to trial this and will be looking at options / solutions tonight

Set it so a rep level IE "Honored" unlocks animated PFP. Give some use to the rep ranks. +1

my only gripe with this is there are many people on the forums who -rep just to do it. Many people will never hit this rank. I believe what Heart said, relating it to post count would be able to reach a wider demographic while keeping it somewhat unique. as alot of people struggle to keep rep. This would also reward and incentivize people to rate AARs and participate in community topics.

If it isn't gonna break shit do it, if it might break shit don't do it. Animated pictures aren't worth things breaking, but if its all good then no reason not to IMO.  We have a pretty good limit on file sizes for profile pictures so i think load times won't get too crazy.

not to mention, there is plenty of file compression sites to help further reduce the size of the file
